Why convert AVIF to PNG?
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec and typically beats WebP by another 20–30% at the same quality, with transparency and HDR support. Browser support is universal since 2024, but many image editors, email clients and upload forms do not accept it yet.
PNG is lossless and supports full transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. Photos saved as PNG are large.
What changes in the conversion
PNG is lossless, so nothing further is lost in the conversion, but the AVIF compression already applied cannot be undone; the PNG file will be much larger without being sharper. How it works on your device
Your browser decodes the AVIF file into raw pixels, draws them onto a canvas and asks its built-in encoder to write PNG. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why there is no file-size limit beyond your device's memory and no queue.
