Why convert GIF to PNG?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which ruins photos but suits simple animations and flat graphics. It supports one-bit transparency (a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent).
PNG is lossless and supports full transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. Photos saved as PNG are large.

How it works on your device
Your browser decodes the GIF file into raw pixels, draws them onto a canvas and asks its built-in encoder to write PNG. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why there is no file-size limit beyond your device's memory and no queue.
