Getting the photo right before you crop
Most rejections are not about size; they are about the photo itself. Stand about 1.5 m from a plain, light wall, with the light source in front of you (a window works) so there are no shadows on the face or behind the head. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and visible; remove glasses if the authority asks (the USA does), and keep hair off the face. Ask someone to take the photo from eye level rather than using a selfie, which distorts the face at close range.
How the guides work
Every specification defines the photo size and the head height from chin to crown. When you choose a size, the frame locks to its ratio and two dashed lines show the recommended head height (for example 29–34 mm on a 45 mm-tall UK photo). Drag and resize the frame until the top of the hair touches the upper line and the chin the lower one; the eyes should then sit roughly in the upper third. The pixel readout confirms you still have enough resolution: printing needs at least 300 DPI, so a 35 × 45 mm photo needs a crop of at least 413 × 531 px.
Printing at home or at a shop
The sheet option tiles the photo on 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo paper, the size every pharmacy kiosk and photo printer accepts, with thin cut lines and 3 mm gaps. A 4 × 6 sheet holds eight 35 × 45 mm photos or four 2 × 2 inch photos. Print at 100% scale (turn off "fit to page") so the sizes stay exact, on matte or glossy photo paper as the authority requires.
Digital submissions
Online applications usually specify minimum and maximum pixel dimensions and a file-size cap. The result box shows the exported pixel size; if a cap applies, run the JPG through the compressor with the right target. Do not upscale a tiny crop to meet a minimum; retake the photo instead.
Backgrounds
This tool does not replace the background. Most authorities want a plain light background as photographed; some (USA, India, China) require white. Photograph against a white or light-grey wall or a sheet of paper. A background-removal tool is on our roadmap.
