Social media image sizes (2026): 52 placements across 12 platforms

Every recommended image size in one table, checked against each platform's current guidance. Click "resize" next to any placement to open a free tool preset to those exact pixels; photos are scaled to fill and centre-cropped in your browser, never uploaded.

Instagram image sizes

Instagram crops anything outside its supported ratios and downsamples wide images to 1080 px, so uploading exactly 1080 px wide at the right ratio avoids blur and unexpected cropping. Portrait 4:5 posts take up the most feed space and are the current default for single images.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
square post1080 × 10801:1Classic square. Still the safest for carousels mixing photos and graphics.resize
portrait post1080 × 13504:5Fills more of the feed; the default crop for single-image posts.resize
landscape post1080 × 5661.91:1Shows smallest in the feed; use only for wide scenes.resize
story1080 × 19209:16Keep text 250 px away from top and bottom where the UI overlays sit.resize
reel cover1080 × 19209:16The centre 1080 × 1350 area is what shows in the grid; keep the subject there.resize
profile picture320 × 3201:1Displayed as a circle; keep the face centred. Uploading 1080 × 1080 is fine.resize

Formats: JPG or PNG; Instagram re-encodes everything to JPG. Limit: 30 MB per image, 8 MB recommended.

Facebook image sizes

Facebook compresses images heavily. Uploading at its stated sizes, as JPG under 1 MB, produces less visible compression than larger files, because the platform then skips a resize pass. Cover photos are cropped differently on desktop and mobile, so keep the subject in the centre.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
feed post1200 × 6301.91:1Matches the link-preview size, so one image works for both.resize
square post1080 × 10801:1Performs well on mobile where the feed is narrow.resize
cover photo820 × 3122.63:1Desktop shows 820 × 312; phones crop to 640 × 360, so keep the middle 640 px important.resize
profile picture170 × 1701:1Upload at least 320 × 320 for retina screens.resize
story1080 × 19209:16Same as Instagram stories; text-safe zone excludes top and bottom 250 px.resize
event cover1920 × 10051.91:1Shown large on desktop; avoid small text.resize

Formats: JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text (less compression on text edges). Limit: 15 MB per image (JPG); under 1 MB recommended.

YouTube image sizes

YouTube thumbnails are shown at anything from 168 px wide in suggested videos to full width on TV apps, so a 1280 × 720 image with large, high-contrast elements is the standard. Channel banners are cropped aggressively by device; only the central safe area is guaranteed to show everywhere.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
thumbnail1280 × 72016:9Minimum width 640 px; must be 16:9 or it is letterboxed.resize
channel banner2560 × 144016:9Safe area for text and logos is the central 1546 × 423 px.resize
channel profile picture800 × 8001:1Displayed as a 98 px circle in most places.resize
Shorts thumbnail1080 × 19209:16Shorts use a frame from the video; this size is for custom vertical covers.resize

Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP for thumbnails; JPG or PNG for banners. Limit: Thumbnail 2 MB; banner 6 MB.

LinkedIn image sizes

LinkedIn is viewed mostly on desktop in a narrow feed column, so 1200 px wide images look sharp without being heavy. Personal banners and company banners have different sizes and different crops on mobile; the bottom-left of a personal banner is covered by the profile photo.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
post image1200 × 6271.91:1Also the link-preview size for shared articles.resize
square post1080 × 10801:1Takes more vertical feed space on mobile.resize
personal profile banner1584 × 3964:1The profile photo overlaps the bottom-left ~300 px; keep that area plain.resize
company page banner1128 × 1915.9:1Very wide and short; logos and short text only.resize
profile picture400 × 4001:1Displayed as a circle; face should fill about 60% of the frame.resize
company logo300 × 3001:1Shown at 100 × 100 in feeds; simple marks work best.resize

Formats: JPG or PNG. Limit: 8 MB for posts; banners 8 MB.

X (Twitter) image sizes

X shows single images at 16:9 in the timeline and crops others to that ratio in previews, so a 1600 × 900 image is displayed without cropping. Header images are cropped on mobile at the top and bottom; profile pictures are round.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
post image1600 × 90016:9Displayed uncropped in the timeline at this ratio.resize
header (banner)1500 × 5003:1Mobile trims roughly 60 px top and bottom.resize
profile picture400 × 4001:1Cropped to a circle.resize
link card1200 × 6281.91:1For og:image / twitter:image on websites.resize

Formats: JPG, PNG or WebP; GIF up to 15 MB. Limit: 5 MB for photos on web.

TikTok image sizes

TikTok is a vertical, full-screen format. Covers and photo-mode posts use 1080 × 1920; the bottom ~30% and the right edge are covered by captions, buttons and the sound bar, so keep faces and text in the upper-middle area.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
video cover1080 × 19209:16Profile grid shows a centre crop at roughly 3:4; keep the key element central.resize
photo post1080 × 19209:16Square 1080 × 1080 also works but shows with blurred bars.resize
profile picture200 × 2001:1Minimum 20 × 20; upload 400 × 400 for sharpness.resize

Formats: JPG or PNG for photo posts; covers are chosen from video frames or uploaded. Limit: Photo posts: 35 images per post.

Pinterest image sizes

Pinterest favours tall pins. A 2:3 ratio (1000 × 1500) shows fully in the grid; taller pins are cut off in the feed, and square or landscape pins occupy less space and get fewer saves. Text on the pin should be readable at the 236 px feed width.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
standard pin1000 × 15002:3The recommended ratio; nothing is cropped in the feed.resize
square pin1000 × 10001:1Acceptable but shows smaller than 2:3 pins.resize
idea pin page1080 × 19209:16Full-screen vertical format.resize
profile cover800 × 45016:9Shown at the top of your profile on desktop.resize
board cover600 × 6001:1Cropped square from the chosen pin.resize

Formats: JPG or PNG; PNG for pins with text. Limit: 20 MB.

WhatsApp image sizes

WhatsApp compresses photos sent normally to about 1600 px on the longer side and around 70% JPEG quality. Sending at that size already removes nothing extra. Profile pictures and status images have their own sizes; status is full-screen vertical.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
profile picture640 × 6401:1Displayed as a circle; upload square.resize
status image1080 × 19209:16Other ratios are shown with blurred bars.resize
group icon640 × 6401:1Same as the profile picture.resize

Formats: JPG; send as "document" to avoid recompression. Limit: 16 MB for media; 2 GB as document.

Etsy image sizes

Etsy listing photos are shown at 4:3 in search and zoomable on the listing page, so 2000 px wide keeps zoom sharp. The first image doubles as the thumbnail, cropped to 4:3 unless you adjust it. Shop banners come in two sizes depending on the layout.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
listing photo2000 × 15004:3Minimum 2000 px on the shortest side for zoom.resize
big shop banner1600 × 4004:1Small banner is 1200 × 160.resize
shop icon500 × 5001:1Displayed small; simple logos only.resize

Formats: JPG, PNG or GIF. Limit: 20 MB per image.

Amazon image sizes

Amazon requires the main product image on a pure white background, filling at least 85% of the frame, and at least 1000 px on the longest side so the zoom feature activates; 1600 px or larger is recommended. Images are displayed as squares, so a 2000 × 2000 file avoids letterboxing.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
product image2000 × 20001:1Main image must have a white (RGB 255,255,255) background.resize
A+ content module970 × 6001.62:1Standard image module width; other modules vary.resize
store hero banner3000 × 6005:1Cropped on mobile; keep text central.resize

Formats: JPG preferred; PNG, TIFF and GIF accepted. Limit: 10 MB; 10,000 px maximum side.

Shopify image sizes

Shopify accepts large images and generates responsive sizes, but themes display products as squares by default. Uploading 2048 × 2048 gives clean zoom without exceeding the 20 MB limit, and consistent ratios across products keep collection grids aligned.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
product image2048 × 20481:1Shopify recommends square images for consistent grids.resize
collection image1024 × 10241:1Some themes crop collection images to 4:3 or 16:9.resize
homepage hero banner1920 × 108016:9Most themes serve 1920 wide on desktop; 2560 for large screens.resize
store logo500 × 2005:2Upload a PNG with transparency; height under 250 px.resize

Formats: JPG for photos, PNG for transparent graphics, WebP supported. Limit: 20 MB and 20 megapixels per image.

websites & email image sizes

For websites the right size is the largest size the image is displayed at, times the device pixel ratio if you want retina sharpness. Oversized images are the most common cause of slow pages. Email clients cap width at about 600 px and often block images larger than a few hundred kilobytes.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
Open Graph image1200 × 6301.91:1Used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp link previews.resize
full-width hero1920 × 108016:9Serve 2560 wide only for 4K displays.resize
blog featured image1200 × 8003:2Most themes display at 700–900 px; 1200 gives retina headroom.resize
email header600 × 2003:1Email layouts are 600 px wide; use 1200 × 400 for retina.resize
favicon512 × 5121:1Browsers scale this down; also provide 32 × 32 and 180 × 180 (Apple).resize

Formats: WebP for sites (fallback JPG/PNG), JPG or PNG for email. Limit: Aim for under 200 KB per web image and under 100 KB in email.

Why exact sizes matter

Every platform re-encodes uploads. When the image already matches the display size and ratio, the platform skips resizing and cropping, which is where most blur and unexpected framing comes from. Uploading much larger files does not improve quality; it only means the platform's compressor makes the decisions instead of you. The presets above produce the exact pixel dimensions; pair them with the compressor if a platform has a file-size cap.

How we keep this current

Sizes are taken from each platform's own help pages and creator documentation and reviewed when platforms announce changes. If you spot a mismatch, tell us; corrections are logged on the changelog.
