How to use the Signature Generator

1. Sign on the white pad with a finger, stylus or mouse — Undo removes the last stroke.
2. Or set Source to "Typed name", type your name and pick a handwriting style.
3. Choose the ink colour, pen width and exported height.
4. Export, then download the transparent PNG or the vector SVG.

Transparent PNG or SVG?

The PNG has a genuinely transparent background — no white box — so it sits on top of a contract, a letterhead or a coloured block without a visible rectangle. It is cropped tightly to the ink with a small margin, which means it lines up on a signature rule instead of floating in whitespace. Use it in Word, Google Docs, Pages, Keynote, email and anywhere that will not take vector art.

The SVG contains the same strokes as vector paths, built from quadratic curves through the midpoints of the sampled points. That is what makes a mouse-drawn line look smooth rather than jagged. Being vector, it stays perfectly crisp whether it is 2 cm on a form or 40 cm on a banner, and it opens in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and Affinity for recolouring or cleaning up.

Is an image of a signature legally valid?

In most places, for most documents, yes — but it is the weakest tier of electronic signature.

• United Kingdom: the Electronic Communications Act 2000 and the Law Commission’s 2019 report confirm that an electronic signature can execute a contract wherever a signature is required, provided the signatory intended to authenticate the document.
• European Union: the eIDAS Regulation (910/2014) recognises three tiers. A pasted image is a simple electronic signature. An advanced signature is uniquely linked to the signatory and detects later changes; a qualified signature adds a certificate from a trust service provider and has the same legal effect as a handwritten one throughout the EU.
• United States: the federal ESIGN Act and state UETA laws give electronic signatures the same effect as ink for most commercial agreements.

The gap is evidential, not legal. An image proves nothing about who applied it or when, so for anything valuable use a signing platform that records an audit trail, or exchange signed PDFs with certificate-based digital signatures. Deeds, wills, statutory declarations and some property and immigration documents still commonly require a witness or wet ink — check before you rely on an image.

Getting a signature that looks like yours

A mouse produces a shaky, angular line because you are drawing with your arm rather than your fingers. A touchscreen or a graphics tablet is far better. Sign larger than you need and let the export scale it down: the smoothing has more points to work with and small wobbles disappear. Two or three attempts is normal — Undo removes one stroke at a time, Clear pad starts again.

Keep the file private

Treat the exported image exactly as you would a rubber stamp of your signature. Anyone who obtains the file can paste it onto any document, so do not email it around, do not commit it to a shared repository, and do not leave it in a folder that syncs to a shared drive. Where a document will be sent on to others, flattening it into a PDF makes the signature harder to lift than an attached PNG does.
