How to take a photo that passes
Use a plain wall in the required colour (uniform light colour (e.g. light blue or light grey) — plain white is explicitly prohibited), stand about half a metre from it so no shadow falls behind you, and have someone photograph you from eye level about 1.5 m away in daylight or soft indoor light. Look directly at the camera, keep a neutral expression with the mouth closed, and make sure the whole face, both eyes and the edges of the face are visible. Hair should not cover the eyes; remove glasses unless the authority explicitly allows them; head coverings are accepted only for religious or medical reasons and must not cast shadows on the face. Photos are usually required to be recent (taken within the last six months) and unedited: no filters, no background replacement, no retouching.

The dashed lines mark the top of the head and the chin at the France head-height rule; drag and resize the frame until your head sits between them. The readout under the preview shows the crop size in pixels; 413 × 531 px is the minimum for a sharp print at this size, so start from a photo of at least a few megapixels.
